WHAT IS A SKIN TONER

In cosmetics, skin toner or simply toner refers to a lotion or wash designed to cleanse the skin and shrink the appearance of pores, usually used on the face.

According to this definition, it is safe to say that, a toner is a lotion or wash that further cleanses the skin(Please note that skin in this context is the face). 

You would agree with me that in Nigeria, our definition of toner is any lotion or wash that “changes”the skin colour into a lighter shade. This is WRONG!. ANY TONER THAT MAKES YOU LIGHTER IS MESSING YOUR SKIN UP PERIODT!

The question becomes this: since a toner doesn’t lighten the skin, what does the toner do?.👇🏼

REAL FUNCTIONS OF A TONER

A face toner  helps to remove excess dirt, traces of oil and makeup, correct and balance the pH of your skin, and helps control acne. A toner helps to prepare the skin for the next skin care product in a routine. That is, a toner makes whatever product you apply penetrate without any obstruction hence, leading to a healthy and effective skin. 

Think of a face toner as a help mate to your normal face wash routine. Many of us are aware and many are not also aware that mere soap and water can’t cleanse your face. Infact, using a soap on the face is a skin care ABORMINATION🙉 (this is a topic for another day). A toner simply helps set the face for what’s coming next

WHAT KIND OF FACE TONER CAN I USE

Dear Nigerians, I beg you with the name of God avoid any toner that changes your skin tone. There are amazing natural based toners out there for you

If you have an oily skin, there is a toner for you

If you have a dry skin, there is a toner for you

If you have a combination skin, there is a toner for you. 

HOW TO APPLY A TONER

Toner can be applied with a cutton pad 

Toner can be sprayed

If you have a sensitive skin, it is adviced for you to wash off the toner before applying the next product in your skin care routine 

But if your skin isn’t so sensitive like mine, you could go ahead and apply the other products in your routine without washing off the toner.
